This residence was designed for Discovery Land Company founder Mike Meldman as a bold architectural statement within the Zapotal residential community in Costa Rica. Nestled steps from the beach club, the home unfolds as a contemporary interpretation of a tropical courtyard retreat — grounded in raw natural materials, open-air flow, and layered spatial experiences.
Anchored by textured stone walls and deep wood overhangs, the design creates a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living, with dramatic axial views framing the ocean beyond. The splayed rooflines and lifted volumes bring a sense of openness and lightness, while the heavy base forms and enclosed garden pathways ground the structure in the lush coastal terrain.
This house is both private and expansive — a spatial composition that reflects Discovery’s ethos of luxury adventure living, with a soul rooted in the land.
